The locality can probably best be described as the most uncongested resort area in the U.S. Forty years ago the National Park Service took title to all the land on this 50 mile long island, excepting that land contained in or adjacent to the seven various villages: Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton (Cape Hatteras), Frisco and Hatteras. Consequently, anyone who so desires may enjoy a sense of privacy to a degree of thier own choosing while sun bathing, fishing, shelling, and driftwood hunting. Dress strictly informal.

Bird Watching- Cape Hatteras is supposed to have the largest variety of birds in the U.S. Birders know Cape Hatteras as a place where sea, sand, and marsh combine to create exciting birding opportunities year-round. From tiny Piping Plovers to majestic Tundra Swans to powerful Peregrine Falcons, the birds of the island are as varied as they are abundant and accessible.
| Ocean Edge Golf Course- Ocean Edge is a public, nine-hole executive course that also permits 18-hole play. Ocean Edge is open all year. This 1,400-yard, par 30 Hatteras Island course covers 23 acres of dunes. Ocean Edge is the only golf course on Hatteras Island. Its location – hard against the dunes separating the “mainland” from the Atlantic Ocean – makes it one of the most scenic of North Carolina’s coastal courses. |
| Wind Surfing- Windsurfing, as well as surfing, has become a big sport here at Cape Hatteras. Conditions are ideal. Equipment may be rented in Buxton. We have a Wind-Surf Shop located across the highway from the motel, which sells equipment as well as lessons. We have the best wind on the Eastern Seaboard and are one of the closest motels to the famous sinsurfing spot "The Canadian Hole." |
Kiteboarding- A kitesurfer or kiteboarder uses a board with foot-straps or bindings, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel himself and the board across the water. The sport is still in its infancy, but is rapidly growing in popularity. Cape Hatteras is known by many of the worlds best kiteboards as the premiere location for the sport.
Rowboats- Outer Banks Motel has free rowboats available for our gusts to use in the Pamlico Sound. These boats are used primarily for netting Blue Claw Crabs and are kept in a creek basin about 150 ft. from the office. Oars and nets are provided at no charge.
